Skull, Money, Flowers, & Crescent on Canvas

Skull, Money, Flowers, & Crescent

Micron pen ink on very small canvas.

Some of the draft sketches are above. I originally thought I was going to paint this, but then I realized I hadn't done a black & white, organic/edgy drawing in a while, which is definitely my comfort zone. I tried erasing some of the pencil, specifically the triangle shape because I thought it was too large. But canvas is a bit unforgiving so the pencil ended up smudging and I had no choice but to carry on and make it work. I still have to fill in the moon shape, and figure out what should go in the background as this piece feels unfinished at the moment.

SAINT JHN

Friday, December 20, 2019

On Dec 17th, Saint Jhn performed at Webster Hall in NYC, and his show now ranks among the top 5 concerts I've ever been to. This drawing was made before the concert actually, about a month ago in November. I really enjoy drawing black & white contrasted portraits of artists I love, and now I'm so glad I have this one, because the concert elevated his status even higher as one of my favorite artists. His music is fun, danceable, has witty lyrics, and sounds fantastic a cappella. Go listen!!!

Peony - a page from the sketchbook

All I had handy was a blue pen. Flowers are not intimidating objects to draw. I think it seems that way sometimes because the more petals that are added, the more layers that are stacked, and the more strokes that are folded in, gives the drawing some element of depth. However, depth and visual complexity does not equate to difficult to draw. In fact, if you break down this drawing line by line, it really is just a bunch of squiggly lines. How you draw, shape, and weave those lines together determines the success or failure of a drawing. I'm not by any means calling this a masterpiece, but I am just emphasizing how simple these things really are. So for anyone that wants to have a New Year's Resolution to look at their phone less, scroll less, watch less - just pick up a pen and paper and start drawing squiggly lines!!

Painting in Progress..............

Saturday, April 6, 2019

Painting is so different than drawing or sketching. I forgot how evocative color can be, how freeing paint strokes can be, how satisfying the scale of a canvas is. And how patient you have to be. This is the first time really painting in maybe six or seven years.....a bit rusty on some of the acrylic painting techniques and color theory, but it's just been fun to see this girl start coming to life a little
