Elevated negative space cube observation sketch

Sunday, March 3, 2019

I picked up this book on architecture, and one of the pages resonated with me (pictured above), so I decided to give that method a go. Oftentimes it's easy to jump into the details straightaway and then draw outwards from there, but it ends up messing up the proportions or holistic image you have in your head of what you want the final drawing to be. Rather, imagine drawing the box it came in, and look at each element of the image - especially if it is a freehand observation - in proportion to the rest of its parts. The simplest objects can be the most challenging, as I found in this exercise. I laugh just comparing the first and second pictures - the first stage of a drawing is so different than the refined final image.
